WE
BELIEVE IN UNITY IN DIVERSITY: ERIC OZARIO
PANJIM:
"We are around 60 persons, who have come to this
historic Azad Maidan. We are here to protest against
the imposition of one lipi (script) over
the others in Konknni. All of us say: respect all
varieties in Konknni. Thereby only unity among Konknni
people will be brought about," Eric Ozario, president
of Konkani Akademi, Karnataka, told GoaNewsClips.
He said that because all the people in the country
firmly believe in unity in diversity, the unity of
India has been retained.
Ozario
further said, "Therefore we say that whatever
is relevant to India is relevant to Konknni. We are
not against Devanagri but we are for the recognition
of Romi and Kannada scripts and the respect that they
deserve." "We have around 25 lakh Konknni-speaking
population in Karnataka, even more than in Goa, and
we have always used the Kannada script. Hence the
All India Konkani Parishad cannot impose Devangiri
on us," he said. (GoaNewsClips) |

Preparing
Goa for Knowledge Economy
BY VA PAI PANANDIKER
the knowledge economy is emerging within a society and world
in transformation.
This transformation is occurring at every economic level simultaneously.
Basic beliefs and fundamental principles will be challenged.
The focus of evolving economy will need to shift from problem-solving
to opportunity-creation. To deal with the inevitable complexity
that will arise in such a time of transformation,
any local economic policy-maker will need to have a dual appreciation
of natural evolution and relational thinking to optimise results.
There will be a need to deal with existing issues in the short
run (recruiting jobs) as well as developing a culture of transformation
for new income opportunities in the longer run. Goa's economic
policy-makers will need to understand that we can no longer
be constrained by old ideas, measures and limits. New words,
new methods of accountability and new methods of collaboration
will be needed. In other words, a futures context for 21st
century economic development will need to evolve. (Panorma-NT)

Goa's
Development
People's Role in Decision-making
BY JASON KEITH FERNANDES
Two features
which characterise the Indian democracy are the raj of the
technocrat-bureaucrat and the reduction of the idea of democracy
to the conduct of elections. And yet, from a space where
democracy is understood as the sensitivity of the political
system to the voices of the most marginal of persons the
above two practices are at best contrary to, and at worst
repugnant to this spirit. And yet, both seem placed at the
very heart of the planning process in Goa - where the regional
plan is developed by technical experts who have no public
mandate, nor an effective mechanism to obtain the opinion
of the people; and altered at will by the political class
of the State, who perhaps have set a high mark in the country
for the wholesale sale of values and interests. Into this
process and scenario, therefore, how can we introduce the
spirit of democracy into the planning process in Goa, such
that green Goa is not merely an empty aesthetic option but
an opportunity to maintain the quality of life that we have
only recently been nationally lauded for? (Panorama-NT)
