from Bicholim, led by BMC councillor Kamlakar Teli and environmentalist

a grinding halt for nearly two hours by stopping around
20 mining trucks carrying wet iron-ore. What triggered the
stopping of the trucks at around 4 pm was the wet ore that
had spilled all over Bicholim town, literally painting the
roads brown. The situation worsened after the ore dried
up and the mining dust turned out to be a mighty irritant.

The
Three Kings came here...
BY TAWINA FERNANDES
History unfolds itself with every step taken up towards
this magnificent work of architecture. The church in focus
is none other than the legendary church of Reis Magos. The
church represents everything that a church should be, with
its serenity, grandeur and history. Passing through the
boat-building village of Verem, a turn at the Hindu tree
shrine at Verem market will lead you to Reis Magos. The
whitewashed facade is visible from across the Mandovi River.
The Reis Magos Fort was erected to protect the narrowest
point at the mouth of the Mandovi estuary. Constructed in
1555, the church was shortly built after the fort of the
same name. It is one of the earliest churches built in Goa
and the first in the Bardez taluka. (GT)

Love
fish, love football
BY ARTI DAS
The culture that draws its inspiration from the countryside
of eastern India came to Goa in search of better prospects.
And this melting pot of diverse cultures embraced these
friendly and creatively inclined people whole-heartedly.
Similarities between the two communities have strengthened
their inclination towards Goa. Both communities have a weakness
for fish and football. The village life is more or less
similar too. Like Goans, Bengalis also think a meal is incomplete
without fish. Most of the Bengalis in Goa are basically
from the service background. Football too gives these cultures
a common ground. It is only in Goa, Bengal and Kerala that
football mania has reached greater heights. Another reason
for Bengalis to feel an affinity towards Goa is because
of the similarities in cuisine. There are those that like
Goa because of its communal harmony. (GT)
