FORCE 3000 SOUND THE 'WAR' BUGLE
Saleli's massive gatheringSALELI: The villagers of Saleli have given a 24-hour deadline to the police to release their fellow villagers arrested in connection with the rioting that took place at Saleli last Wednesday, failing which they would intensify their agitation. Yesterday afternoon (Jan 3) a villager, Bomnado Gaonkar, took a vow before the village deity, Kelbai Sateri, on behalf of the Saleli villagers that they would commence an indefinite hunger strike. Around 3,000 people marched the streets of Valpoi town to protest against the arrest of their fellow villagers. The demonstration led by Shetkari Kamgar Sangh president Puti Gaonkar, made its way through the town to the Mamlatdar's office, where he submitted a memorandum on behalf of the villagers of Sattaridemanding the immediate release of villagers, whom they claimed were falsely charged with fabricated charges, withdrawal of charges, closure of all the stone crushers in the reserved forest area, and grant of cultivated land whose possession was with farmers for several decades. A similar memorandum was also submitted by the villagers of Saleli to Kerkar, which demanded abolishment of the Mocassos land title from Sattari and a free and fair investigation of the Saleli incident by appointing a special judicial inquiry. At a meeting held at the Valpoi bus stand, the speakers denounced CM Rane, alleging that while being their MLA, he failed to give them justice. North Goa MP Shripad Naik and AITUC president Christopher Fonseca were among the speakers. (GT)

BJP uses cash and kind to oust 'kashe' Rane
PANJIM: Goa's longest serving 'khashe' Pratapsing Raoji Rane's 33-year-old hegemony over Poriem constituency may crumble under the weight of discontent and anger of villagers from Saleli and neighbouring areas. The BJP sensing its biggest ever opportunity to cash in on the resentment has planned 'Operation Poriem' in a scientific battle-like manner while, a divided Congress was caught napping and oscilating between confusion and silence. Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar has promised financial, legal and material aid when the villagers needed most. Undoubtedly a smart political ploy, cash doles, blankets and promise of legal assistance are likely to make heavy political inroads. In addition, arrangements have been made to supply food and ration. (GT)
