MAKING
A MOCKERY OF LEGISLATIONS
I see a huge truckload of imported planting material being unloaded
near the Cujira intersection of Panaji-Bambolim by-pass...They also
tell me that demand for ornamental and fruit plants picks up during
this season and hundreds of trucks import such material in Goa before
the monsoon. I make a quick calculation - it is wholesale dumping
of uncertified planting material worth Rs.15 crores per year - and
unfortunately there is no action from the directorate of agriculture,
the enforcement agency. One one side the local nurseries which are
registered under the Goa Fruit And Ornamental Plants Nurseries Act,
1997, lose business, and, on the other side the government in blatant
violation of the Act is encouraging spread of infected plants indiscriminately
all over Goa. (Nandkumar Kamat, Glimpses-NT)

drugs worth Rs.80,96,520 were seized during 2005 alone while during
2004 the seizures were worth Rs.33,65,600 and in 2003 around Rs.15,09,600.
