FEW CLUES TO PARISH PRIEST'S MURDER
Fr Eusebio FerraoMACASANA, Mar 19: The shock and fear waves that ripped the rather obscure South Goa village of Macasana with the killing of parish priest Fr Eusebio Ferrao in the wee hours of March 18, spread throughout the State by the evening. Based on the information provided by the mess boy Sunil Rodrigues, hailing from Sirsi in Karnataka, the police are investigating on the theory that two youths from Uttar Pradesh - Amit and Manish - were responsible for strangulating the 61-year-old Chinchinim-born priest. It has also been revealed that his abdomen, chest and back had 27 stab wounds. The funeral has been scheduled for tomorrow. Fr Eusebio's body will be brought to Macasana church and thereafter taken to his ancestral village Deussua-Chinchinim for the last rites. (GoaNewsClips)

ARCHBISHOP FERRAO MOURNS FR EUSEBIO'S DEATH
Archbishop Ferrao MACASANA: During his visit to the parish church, Archbishop Felipe Neri Ferrao said that the unexpected and painful death of "a fairly young priest", was an irreparable loss. The Archbishop said that Fr Eusebio Ferrao served the parish with loving care, and has appealed to the entire Catholic community to remain calm. “While as a community of faith we accept this painful and unexpected death, with total surrender to God’s will, knowing that Jesus has obtained for us eternal life through his death, which eternal life this priest will share in all its fullness, we expect that the concerned authorities will look in the painful death and will undertake the necessary investigation to identify those who are responsible for this very violent and painful death," he added. A call of all Goa
The murder of Fr. Eusebio Ferrao should open the eyes of all Goans - Catholic, Hindus and Muslims - that our places of worship are not safe either from burglary or death. Our nation, although secular in principle, is not the same in practice. The damage to the crosses and churches, damaging of mosques and bombs in Varanasi temple, causing the death of innocent citizens, should make us all ashamed. It is my firm conviction that the Archbishop, Fr. Filipe Neri Ferrao, and the heads of other religious communities in Goa should join and discuss the issues of safety with an open mind. In today's modern times the installation of electronic safety alarms, smoke detectors, burglar alarms, and uniformed security are easily available and the security consultant if employed will provide a viable solution. On behalf of all the Goans in Hong Kong our heart felt sympathies to the family of the late Fr. Eusebio Ferrao.

"THE PARISH WAS HIS WINDOW TO GOD"
An eloquent tribute to the late Fr Eusebio Agnelo Ferrao (1944-2006) by his dear friend and colleague Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas
With profound grief and sadness we mourn the untimely death of our beloved companion, Fr. Eusebio Agnelo Ferrao, on 17th March, 2006, at the age of 61 years, while serving his Christian flock as the Parish Priest of St. Francis Xavier's Church in Macasana, Salcete, Goa. Fr. Eusebio's death has robbed us of a dear friend, prolific writer, a lively yet simple priest and an able administrator....MORE

Uniquely Goan
THE VERSATILE GOAN ABROAD
By Eric Mendonca
The early settlers in Karachi started chummeries or bachelor establishments, to house the incoming migrants. Each chummery took the name of their respective Goan village or village saint. On the feast day of the saint there were regular do's - in fact, they were gala days. Those Goans, who had moved out into independent houses and tenements, never forgot the first chummeries which had housed them, and they now came with their families, in their Sunday best, bringing hampers filled with "bibica", "koiloios", "dodol", "batika", "vorhes", "sorpotel", "neureos", "kul-kuls", and bottles of "fenni" - "cajel" and muscatel. They sang their folk songs and danced the "mando" and dakni" and "kunbi dances" - preserving their age-old folk-ways. (Courtesy: Je Me Souviens - I Remember)

Let's provide a sincere alternative: Nitin Kunkolienkar
Rene Barretto's addressMAPUSA, Mar 18: Let us come up with a sincere alternative of an NRI forum rather than criticise what has been done so far. Goa has a tremendous potential to develop but we are in a rather weak condition. The government has to seize the opportunity right away to make it big at the all-India as well as global level since the State has been blessed with an excellent tourism potential. NRGs should demand a totally secular state though it doesn't concern as to whole rules. Deficiencies in the educational syllabus need urgent attention, while the health hub needs a relook. NRIs need to be provided with a trustworthy system for directing their investment. We also need to provide a proper forum to link up all the NRG-related activities and the Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry is ready to provide the necessary cooperation. GCCI president Nitin Kunkolienkar told this to the gathering at the Global Goan Meet convened by UK-based NRI Rene Barretto at Braganza Hotel in Mapusa today.
Nitin Kunkolienkar Sharing the dais was GCCI's Manguirish Pai Raikar, Mathew Braganza and Rene Barretto, while Vivian (Shenji) D'Souza compered ably the proceedings. Rene Barretto emphasised on the need to think positively in what way we can contribute towards Goa's development and spreading of goodwill in a positive manner. Speaking on the setting up of an IT Club, young computer programmer Jason Monserrate provided the details of the new website to be set up by Vertical Solutions to meet the information needs of the large NRI community. The meet concluded with an interactive session wherein the GCCI president explained how the proposed NRI forum would be set up. (GoaNewsClips)
