THREE-PRONGED ASSAULT ON SEZs
PANJIM: While consolidation of people's groups under the banner of Goa Bachao Abhiyan, rightly shorn of political elements, successfully ran the Regional Plan 2011 aground, another agitation of identical dimensions to oppose the Special Economic Zones in Goa is now shaping up, albeit under three different banners, inclusive of political forces. Even as a collective, Goa's Movement Against SEZs, led by former MLA Matanhy Saldanha and comprising a few NGOs had already announced its plan to resist the setting up of the SEZs, a new apolitical forum christened the SEZ Virodhi Manch - actually a conglomeration of four NGOS - Goa Bachao Abhiyan, Jagrut Goem, Council for Social Justice and Peace and People's Movement Against SEZs - also unveiled its plan to join the stir And the NCP, an ally of the Congress-led government, has also pledged to support every effort to prevent the large-scale industrial development. Govt to re-issue 'stop work' order against Aldeia project
PANJIM: Chief Minister Digambar Kamat yesterday assured the Goa Bachao Abhiyan that the government will revoke the withdrawal of the 'stop work order' issue to Goan Real Estates Private Limited on its 'Aldeia de Goa' project at Bambolim. Kamat also sought details of the entire project even as he ordered the North Goa Additional Collector to re-issue 'stop work' orders for the ongoing works here. Kamat gave the assurance to the delegation of GBA comprising Dr Oscar Rebello, Patricia Pinto, Anand Madgaokar, Claude Alvares, Soter D'Souza, Ritu Prasad, Shridhar Kamat and others. Dr Rebello said, the Goa Bachao Abhiyan was not targetting any project but their concern was that the rules and regulations of the Town and Country Planning be strictly followed. [GT]

TCP exposed on hill cutting
PANJIM, Nov 12: The Town and Country Planning department was today thoroughly exposed by the Goa Bachao Abhiyan over the project at Bambolim when at a meeting it came to light that the TCP department succumbed to pressure from the project developers for withdrawing stop work orders and the police complaint. Girl's throat slit in cold-blooded murder
VASCO, Nov 12: In a clod blooded murder a young girl was done to death by slitting her throat at an isolated place in Cortalim close to Verna Industrial Development Corporation. According to investigating officer PI Nolasco Raposo, a 25-year-old girl was found murdered at an isolated place in Cortalim and whose body is yet to be identified. [H]

Dasmunshi to review IFFI preparations
PANJIM: Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Priyaranjan Dasmunshi is arriving in Goa on Sunday to review the ongoing preparations for the 38th International Film Festival of India in Goa starting from November 23 even as nearly 6000 applications have been submitted online for registration.[GT]

CCP stops lifting city garbage
PANJIM: The Corporation of City of Panjim on November 12 decided to stop lifting garbage in the entire city after the people blocked the dumping of garbage at Tonca-Panjim, even as the CCP has called an emergency meeting at 4 pm today, November 13, in an attempt to resolve the issue. [GT]

Mob brutally assaults Arambol businessman
ARAMBOL: One James D'Souza, proprietor of J's Lounge, of Arambol was brutally assaulted by a group of 18 people, on November 12 afternoon. It is learnt that the assailants are also residents of Arambol and the motive behind the attack is learnt to be business rivalry. [GT]

Thousands participate in lantern procession
MARGAO, Nov 12: Thousands of devotees participated in the traditional lantern procession from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel, Telaulim, to Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim, in the wee hours of Monday, marking the commencement of the novenas of the feast of Our Lady of Rosary church. Carrying colourful lanterns and candles, people from all walks of life and from beyond the boundaries of Navelim and Telaulim villages participated in the procession, which later culminated in an eucharistic celebration at the church grounds. Dindi Festival from Nov 18
MARGAO, Nov 12: The famous Dindi festival of Hari Mandeer Devasthan, Margao, will be celebrated on November 23. The festival of Dindi began in 1909. This year the programme will be held for seven days and religious as well as entertainment and Sangeet Baitaks are being organised to mark the festival. [NT]

Mapusa MLA's sister allegedly assaulted
PANAJI, Nov 12: The sister of Mapusa MLA, Mr Francisco D'Souza, was injured in an assault by seven persons from Arrao, Pomburpa, who allegedly wrongfully restrained and physically assaulted her this afternoon. The victim, Ms Maria Lobo from Pomburpa, lodged a written complaint with the Mapusa police station. Ms Lobo informed the police that this was a fall out of a civil suit filed against them before the court of civil judge, Mapusa. [NT]

Mormugao beaches could do with more lifeguards
VASCO, Nov 12: The deployment of lifeguards on the beaches on the coastal belt of Mormugao have helped reduce the drowning cases. The stage government recently deployed trained lifeguards at Bogmalo beach and Baina beach. However, Bogmalo beach records over two thousand tourists and thus needs at least one more lifeguard in order to maintain vigil on the beach, Mr Laxman Kavlekar, the Chicolna-Bogmalo sarpanch, said. Goa suffer 111-run defeat
PANJIM: Goa suffered a humiliating 111-run defeat to Karnataka in the under-15 Polly Umrigar Trophy South Zone cricket tournament at Trivandrum yesterday. Chasing the target of 240 for victory set by Karnataka, who declared their second innings at 99-3 for an overall lead of 239, Goa were bowled out for 128 in 82.2 overs on the third and final day.
