Notified
SEZ can't be
scrapped: Centre
NEW
DELHI: The Centre
yesterday said
state governments
do not have
the power to
scrap notified
special economic
zones although
they can seek
cancellation
of those that
are in the pipeline.
"There
is no provision
under law (for
states) to recommend
de-notification
They have
no locus standi
to withdraw
the notifications
to the SEZs,"
Commerce Secretary
Gopal Pillai
told reporters
when asked about
Goa government's
decision to
scrap all the
upcoming SEZs
in the state.
He, however,
said except
the three notified
zones, there
should be no
problem about
other projects
as the Centre
would like to
honour the sentiments
of the state.
The three SEZs
- Cipla's Meditab
Specialties,
Peninsula Pharma
Research Centre
and K Raheja
Corpn - have
acquired land.

Matanhy
Saldanha
has deplored
the Union
Government's
stance
stating
that it
had scant
respect
for the
wishes
of the
people
of Goa.
Saldanha
said,
"The
GMAS demands
that the
ACt be
amended
to fulfill
the needs
of the
very people,

Himachal
PANJIM:
Chief Minister
Digambar
Kamat on
Monday informed
a delegation
of members
from the
SEZ Virodhi
Manch that
he has already
asked for
a study
of relevant
Acts of
Himachal
Pradesh
and Uttaranchal
to examine
the issue
of banning
sale of
land to
non-Goans.
The SVM
suggested
to Kamat
during the
dialogue
on SEZs
at his official
residence,
Altinho-Panjim,
that government
examine
the possibility
of a ban
on sale
of agricultural
land to
non-agriculturists
and also
a ban on
sale of
land in
Goa to non-Goans.

Quitol
project is not
a 'Food Park':
Sardinha
MARGAO:
South Goa MP and
the GPCC president
Francisco Sardinha
on Wednesday claimed
to be against
the proposed "Food
Park" situated
on an approximate
five lakh sq mts
of land at Quitol,
Betul, but at
the same time
clarified that
the nomenclature
was 'misleading'
to the people.

Cuncolim:
State's
envy,
local
MLA's
pride
CUNCOLIM:
This semi-urban
township
can give
major
cities
in Goa
a run
for their
money.
And, make
city fathers
in the
rest of
the state
boil with
envy.
Just imagine,
for a
population
in the
region
of around
25,000
in Cuncolim,
the state
government
has lined
up a whopping
nine projects,
four of
which
have already
been completed.
And need
we mention
that local
MLA Joaquim
Alemao
is also
the Urban
Development
Minister
in addition
to being
the Chairman
of the
State
Urban
Development
Agency
(SUDA)
- the
latter
in charge
of executing
all these
projects?

Coconut
farmers
in quandary
over pluckers
PANJIM,
Jan 2:
Coconut
forms
the basis
of Goan
cuisine.
But Goans
might
be compelled
to reduce
the use
of coconut
in their
diet in
near future,
and mind
you, not
for any
health
reasons.
Non-availability
of coconuts
would
be the
sole reason
as farmers
are now
finding
it extremely
difficult
to harvest
the produce
for want
of "padekars"
(people
who climb
the coconut
trees).
High cost
of cultivation
has also
put off
coconut
farmers.

Rao
deplores
India's
declining
contribution
to world
science
PANAJI,
Jan 2:
Prof CNP
Rao, the
chairman
of the
Science
Advisory
Council
to the
Prime
Minister,
said that
IT sector
had destroyed
the Indian
talent
though
IT was
contributing
to wealth
at the
cost of
developing
scientific
talent
and performance
which
remained
stagnant
and on
decline
as of
now, compared
to other
countries
including
China.
Prof Rao
also deplored
that India's
contribution
to world
science
was as
low as
2.7 per
cent and
it was
likely
to go
down to
one per
cent in
due course.

Palolem
beach
CANACONA,
Jan 2:
The popular
Palolem
beach
became
the hub
of activity
for thousands
of domestic
tourists
from all
over the
country,
pushing
foreign
tourists
towards
nearby
beaches
like Colomb,
Patnem
and Agonda,
to escape
the rampaging
domestic
revelers
during
the festive
season.
Many of
the revelers
at Palolem
on the
eve of
the New
Year were
domestic
tourists
from Karnataka,
Tamil
Nadu and
Kerala,
who outnumbered
foreign
tourists.
