Babush downloads Narvekar
PANJIM: As expected, Taleigao MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate took his tussle with the government over the Rajiv Gandhi IT Habitat at Dona Paula to the Goa legislative assembly, engaging in a high-decibel verbal clash with IT Minister Dayanand Narvekar, during question hour on January 14. A flustered Narvekar was coerced by a charged-up opposition to give an assurance that he would "revert the plots" allotted at the IT Habitat, if the allotees do not set up the required infrastructure at the site within the time-span of two years. Replying to the starred query raised by Monserrate, the IT minister claimed that he had followed the procedure as per the criteria laid out for the allotment of plots in the IT Habitat at Dona Paula. Willy eyes Taleigao, Curtorim if Babush, Lourenco quit
PANJIM: State NCP president Dr Wilfred de Souza yesterday staked claim to the Taleigao and Curtorim assembly seats, in the event both the incumbent MLAs resign and create vacancies. Citing precedents in Maharashtra, which makes him confident that the NCP would get these two seats, Dr Willy categorically stated that he would get an assurance from his leaders and would not do anything unilaterally. Oppn alleges kerosene scam, demands scrapping of hawkers
PANJIM, Jan 14: Minister for Civil Supplies Jose Philip D'Souza today came under fire for what the Opposition alleged to be a kerosene scam and demanded the scrapping of hawkers dealing with kerosene in the state. The Opposition expressed apprehensions over kerosene pilferage and its sale in the open markets at higher rates for the purpose of adulterating fuel. [H]

Baby abductors get 5 days police remand
PANJIM: The court, on January 14, remanded the three accused, who were arrested on charges of kidnapping an 18-month old baby at Candolim on January 11 night, to five days police custody. Police however, are yet to recover the cash and gold stolen during the kidnap-and-robbery incident that took place at the D'Souza residence at Escrivao Vaddo, Candolim. [GT]
Parrikar moves amendments to motion of thanks
PANJIM: Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar yesterday moved several amendments to the motion of thanks to the address of Governor SC Jamir in the Goa Legislative assembly. Parrikar regretted that there was no mention in the address about the failure of the government of sale/use of drugs in the coastal belt which is on the rise and the failure of the anti-narcotics cell to control the same. MARGAO, Jan 14: A hospital servant (at Hospicio) is alleged to have extorted bribes from a patient - John Fernandes - not once, but on three occasions - for medical services such as X-ray, sonography test and even for a bottle of blood. Exasperated over the repeated demands raised by the servant, the patient finally brought the matter to the notice of the Hospicio Medical Superintendent. [H]

14 orphanages, old age homes share prize
PANJIM: Fourteen orphanages and old age homes spread all over the state shared Goa Sudhaorp Community Development Inc's main award for 'Year of Child 2005 and Year of the Seniors 2006. The orphanages shared the prize amount of Rs.2,50,000 and old age homes Rs.1,00,000 respectively for their untiring work in providing succor to abandoned and destitute children and elderly people, irrespective of caste and religions. Three personalities - Sunil Korajkar of Green Cross, Clinton Vaz (garbage management expert) and Mustard Seed Art Company were also given cash awards. [GT]

Some nations project Goa as unfafe tourist destination: Ravi
PANAJI, Jan 14: The Home Minister, Mr Ravi Naik, has alleged that some nations were involved in media campaign to project that Goa was not a safe destination for tourists. He, however, refused to disclose which countries were behind the malicious campaign against the state. [NT]

PANAJI, Jan 14: Reacting to his nomination to the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year 2007 award in the Public Service category, the convenor of the Goa Bachao Abhiyan, Dr Oscar Rebello, today said that the nomination is not for one individual but for the GBA and for the people of Goa. [NT]

Carnival organisation meet held
PANJIM, Jan 14: Francisco Pacheco announced that the GTDC chairman, Shyam Satardekar, will be the chairman of the Central Core committee for organising the Carnival at five centres in Goa. Carnival will be held at four cities on February 2, 3, 4 and 5. [H]

British woman's rape case: five detained
PANJIM: Panjim police has detained five persons for questioning in connection with the rape of the British woman, even as they are ascertaining that the place where the rape took place was near the Merces spring. The medical report at the Goa Medical College and Hospital also confirmed the rape. It is learnt that the 32-year-old woman had feared for her life, and gave in to the accused's demands. Initially, she had put up resistance but was brutally assaulted. She also had to beg him to have something to cover herself, after the incident. [GT]

9000 seek regularisation of Comunidade encroachments
PANJIM, Jan 14: More than 9000 applications have been received by the government for regularisation of encroachments on Comunidade land in the State. Furnishing the information, Revenue Minister Jose Phillip D'Souza told Mapusa MLA Francis D'Souza that there are 4943 cases in North Goa and 4247 cases in South Goa. [H]

Aldeia moves High Court against govt decision
PANJIM: M/s Goan Real Estate and Construction Ltd, the promoters of the controversial Aldeia de Goa, has approached the Bombay High Court at Goa against the government's decision to withdraw the order withdrawing the stop work order issued to GRECL on November 2, 2007. [GT]

Medical tourism market pegged to grow
VASCO: The medical tourism market in India has been pegged to grow around Rs.11,000 crore by the next couple of years approx till year 2012-13. David Wood, a resident of UK, is one of the first to avail of the opportunity of medical tourism at VIVUS SMRC Heart Centre. He came to India as a tourist, and chose Goa as a tourist destination. Joint squads soon to combat leopard menace: Felipe Neri
PANJIM: Forests Minister Felipe Neri Rodrigues yesterday stated in the Legislative Assembly that the forest officers will form joint squads with the NGOs and local villagers to combat leopard menace in some of the areas of the Bicholim taluka. Reiterating that the government will continue its efforts to contain the unprecedented problems of leopards in the villagers, he pointed out that the sensitivity of this protected animal and the wildlife regulation prevents taking extreme measures until and unless circumstances so warrant and all the possible remedies are exhausted. Titled 'Eco-Tourism for a Green Benaulim' is a booklet by Clinton Vaz which is priced at Rs.49. This booklet gives you Benaulim's history in a nutshell besides interesting facts about the village. CALANGUTE, Jan 11: "Every time I come for Mr Rajendra Usapkar's exhibition, I see a great amount of evolution, step by step, in respect of his subjects and his capacity as a creator. His capacity is quite unlimited and he has a great future ahead of him," said renowned artist Vamona Navelkar, after inaugurating "Ebony & Irony", an exhibition of "pen and ink" drawings, wood-cut and etchings on paper, at Casa Goa art gallery in Calangute.
The exhibition, which was inaugurated this evening and which will be on display until January 20, comprises Usapkar's most recent collection of exquisite "pen and ink" drawings, wood-cut and etchings on paper. Odafe magic continues
MARGAO, Jan 14: Nigerian striker Odafe Okolie struck four goals, including the fastest in the ONGC I-League, as Churchill Bros Sports Club overcame Mahindra United, Mumbai, 4-2 at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda. Odafe gave Churchill Bros a dream start scoring in the 51st second, the fastest in India's premier domestic competition. [H]
