question

charges
for

wanted
to know
the
details
of PILS
filed
against
the
state
government
in the
Bombay
High
Court
at Goa,
since
April
2005
and
the
amount
paid
to the
lawyers.

panel
to decide
on garbage
sites:
CM
PANJIM:
In an
attempt
to resolve
the
issue
of selecting
garbage
disposal
sites,
Chief
Minister
Digambar
Kamat
yesterday
stated
in the
Legislative
Assembly
that
the
government
would
appoint
a House
Committee
and
that
whatever
decision
it takes,
would
be binding
on all
the
members
and
their
parties.

Plastic
road for Ponda soon
PONDA:
After money, it's roads
that are going plastic,
and the Ponda Municipal
Council is Goa's first
civic body to seize
the initiative. A 'plastic
road' is sanctioned
by the Central Pollution
Control Board and the
demo road will be built
on the stretch from
the municipal office
to Dada Vaidhya Chowk
in Ponda town. It would
be 500 metres long and
its estimated cost is
Rs.6.20 lakh. The CPCB
and the local municipality
will share the cost
on a 50:50 basis.

Health
officials to scan massage
parlours, labs
PANJIM, Mar 25: Massage
parlours, pathological
laboratories and diagnostic
centre in the state
will soon come under
the scanner of the Health
Department. In order
to curb 'illegal mushrooming'
of such parlours in
the state, the Goa Assembly
today introduced a bill
making it mandatory
for all massage parlours
or other business offering
similar services, to
obtain prior permission
from the Directorate
of Health Services.

passed a bill
seeking to prohibit
ragging in educational
institutions
in Goa. A student
convicted of
ragging will
not be given
admission in
any educational
institution
in Goa for a
period of three
years, according
to the provisions
of the bill.

of growing unemployment
accompanying

growth, and
the problem
of in-migration
into the state,

supply and demand

deals by foreign
nationals have
been found in
contravention

Woman
booked for tying girl
to gate

a shockingly inhuman
incident, a petite 10-year-old
was tied to the gate
of a house in Mapusa
with a rope, and with
stones hanging from
it. A woman from Peddem,
Mapusa, was accused
of strapping the small
girl, Anita Kaskar,
who allegedly entered
the compound to rob
raw mangoes.

Goa debt waiver of s.20.20

for 2007-08 in terms
of the recommendations
of Twelfth Finance commission.

nuns were allegedly
attacked yesterday
morning while

Transport Minister
Sudin Dhavlikar
yesterday told
Goa Assembly
that the government
had decided
to withdraw
the notification
on mandatory
fitment of speed
governors with
immediate effect.

dust linked
to chest ailments
in port town'
MORMUGAO,
Mar 25: Residents
of Vasco had
heaved a sigh
of relief when
the Mormugao
Bachao Abhiyan
made attempts
to stop coal
pollution in
the port town.
Their hopes
were dashed
when the Rojgar
Bachao Abhiyan
staged a counter
movement to
repudiate the
MBA and fight
for the demands
of the 2,000-odd
workers depending
on coal handling
operations in
the port. Unhappy
residents have
now claimed
that the concerns
of the 2,000
workers cannot
outweigh the
health hazards
of 1.5 lakh
residents of
the port town,
who are subjected
to the coal
and coke dust
pollution.

Eminent
jurist passes
away
PANJIM:
Eminent jurist
and retired
Civil Judge
Senior Division
Dr Antonio Blasio
D'Souza passed
away on March
24, 2008. Dr
D'Souza had
the honour of
being the last
Portuguese Mayor
of Salcete and
also the first
Indian mayor
of Salcete.
He is survived
by his wife
and five children.
His funeral
will be held
on march 26
at Our Lady
of Assumption
church, Velsao.

QUEPEM, Mar 25: An agitated
crowd of over 150 people
from Colomb, Rivona,
laid siege to the Quepem
police station late
today evening demanding
that all activities
at a mining site located
in the village
be immediately stopped.
Earlier in the day,
the Quepem police
placed 13 persons from
the village under preventive
arrest after police
apprehended trouble
at the mining site.
