Narvekar presents Rs.4686.27 crore maiden budget
PANJIM: Finance Minister Dayanand Narvekar, on March 26, presented his maiden budget that offers a number of sops to the much talked of "aam aadmi" and levied taxes and cess on transportation of iron ore, coal, and other products of the mining industry. Narvekar's revenue surplus budget of Rs.225.64 crore but with an estimated Rs.799.42 crore fiscal deficit for 2008-09, was presented by him in the Legislative Assembly with a marathon, nearly three-hour speech. It had an estimated Rs.4,687.27 crore budget expenditure as against Rs.3,725 crore of the current fiscal, and increase of over 25 per cent. Narvekar offered waiver of agriculture, housing and panchayat loans besides providing subsidies to the poor which would cost about Rs.100-crore. He, however, nets an additional Rs.300 crore through increase of taxes and duties on the richer segments including excise, house building and entertainment and mining transport sectors. The other highlight was the offer of plots to women entrepreneurs in industrial estates, subsidies to encourage rain water harvesting, welfare of economically weaker sections and encouragement for self-employment and infra-structure development in villages. Dhavlikar floored over DSS scheme
PANJIM: Social Welfare Minister Sudin Dhavvlikar faced anxious moments in the House as the Opposition BJP MLAs turned the heat on him over the Dayanand Social Security Scheme. Non-receipt of cheques by the beneficiaries of the scheme, the proposed re-survey of the beneficiaries, step-motherly treatment accorded to beneficiaries by disbursing banks were some of the issues the opposition BJP MLAs used to put the Social Welfare Minister on the mat. Govt pushing goa into debt trap: BJP
PANAJI, Mar 26: Terming the Goa budget 2008-09 as a 'mountain out of a molehill' budget, the leader of the Opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar, today stated that within less than four years of his departure as chief minister, the Congress government has succeeded in taking the state into a debt trap. Addressing a press conference, Mr Parrikar said total external state debts would cross Rs.5,000 crore mark by the year-end. "The fiscal deficit is almost Rs.800 crore," he said. {NT]

Rahejas challenge decision to scrap SEZ
PANJIM: One of the Special Economic Zone promoters, M/s K Raheja Corporation Ltd, Mumbai, has approached the Bombay High Court at Panjim challenging Goa government's decision to scrap SEZs in the state. The petitioner pointed out that the company had so far invested about Rs.182 crore after the Central government notified its SEZ project at Phase IV, Verna Industrial Estate. It prayed that the state government should reconsider its decision since the company would face huge losses. [GT]

Vagator residents sore over sound pollution by hotel
MAPUSA, Mar 26: Residents of Vagator are annoyed over the manner in which a hotel at Vagator has been conducting rave parties and late night music parties with loud music being played throughout the night. Even though the concerned authorities have been briefed abut the situation, nobody has been willing to take action. [NT]

Govt to outsource upkeep of KTC bus stands: Dhavlikar
PANJIM: In three months from now, all KTC bus stands in the state are slated to have a new look. The government proposes to outsource this exercise to interested private parties. On the other hand, as a via-media, opposition leader Manohar Parrikar wanted Transport Minister Sudin Dhavlikar to plough back about 25 per cent of the earnings of the KTC bus stands to maintain cleanliness at these terminals. One succumbs to injuries
MARGAO, Mar 26: Gerson Lopes, a resident of Borda, aged 85, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident that was reported near St Joaquim Chapel, Borda, yesterday, succumbed to his injuries today morning at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim. Lopes was hit by the motorcycle. [NT]

Guarantee period for bridges to be fixed at 4 years: Alemao
PANJIM: Varying guarantee periods for different types of works executed by the PWD became a bone of contention in the House on March 26. With the Opposition BJP members insisting on extending the guarantee period for bridges from three to five years, the PWD Minister Churchill Alemao relented even as he spoke of changing the PWD Manual to make this possible. NCW to prepare report on Scarlette's death
NEW DELHI, PTI, Mar 26: The National Commission for Women today said it will "independently prepare" a report on the death of British teenager Scarlette Eden Keeling in Goa last month and voiced concern over the "state" of her mother who is "fighting her battle" all alone. [NT]

Drive to fight global warming
PANJIM: Greenpeace organisation has launched a campaign in Goa to pressurise local legislators to act on the global warming issue before the state faces climate-related disasters. "The effort is also to educate the people to play safe, to protect the environment and thereby to pressurise the centre to act instantly in the matter," said the campaigner of Greenpeace, Amrit Bakshi. 'Memory of Horses' at Goa Velha

Tatas acquire Jaguar, Land Rover for $2.3 billion
LONDON, (PTI), Mar 26: Creating history, India's top corporate Tatas today acquired luxury auto brands - Jaguar and Land Rover - from Ford Motor for $2.3 billion, stamping their authority as a takeover tycoon. Beating compatriot Mahindra and Mahindra for the prestigious brands, just a year after acquiring steel giant Corus for $12.1 Billion, Tatas today announced the deal they signed with Ford, which on its part would chip in $600 million towards JLR's pension plan.
