IFFI TO CONTINUE FROM WHERE IT LEFT AFTER 26/11: The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat at the Maquinez Palace on January 12 decide that the peripheral activities of IFFI 2008 which were cancelled following Mumbai terrorist strikes and the seven-day mourning due to death of former Prime Minister VP Singh, would now be rescheduled and held at the same centres soon. Drop suit against Seby, greens scream: A group of social activists held a meet on January 12 in Panjim to demand the immediate withdrawal of the R.500 crore defamation suit against anti-mining activist Sebastian Rodrigues. They have warned of broad-basing their anti-mining stir in case Fomento fail to comply with this demand. At the meet, the company’s vice-president (communications) Sujay Gupta came under verbal attack from almost all social activists, who addressed the meet. [GT]

CM to attend Brahmins’ meet: Chief Minister Digambar Kamat will be one of the VIPs to attend the Fifth Multilingual Brahmin Conference to be held in Pune on January 24 and 25. Chief organiser of the conference Vedacharya Moreshwar V Ghaisas Guruji told journalists in Thane on Sunday that other dignitaries would include Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, the shankaracharyas of all the Peeths, Yoga Maharishi Swami Ramdeo, Yogacharya BKS Iyengar and Pejawar Mathadipathi Vishweshteetha Swami. Ban raises questions of efficacy: In a bid to put an end to menace of plastic bags, the Margao municipal council has decided t ban sale of plastic bags from January 26 from areas within its jurisdiction. The authorities put the onus on the general public for disposal of plastic waste… There is no government function without welcoming the dignitaries with flowers, which are wrapped in cellophane wraps… the flowers along with cellophane wraps are dumped in the garbage. Schools liable for students while on beach study tours: Any college or school that intends to organise a study tour or an excursion to a beach in Goa, will now have to take in writing the consent of at least one parent irrespective of whether the student is a minor or a major. [TOI]

Recession beaten, commercial tax revenues soar: The whole world may be reeling under the effect of the economic downturn but not Goa. At least not if official figures of the actual cash that has come into the state government’s kitty in indirect commercial taxes is anything to go by. Collections have soared a significant 22 per cent in the first three quarters of fiscal 2008-00 despite the much talked of economic recession. [GT]

Bollywood films in NCERT textbooks! Parents will protest but the National Council of Education Research and Training is all set to adopt themes of the Bollywood movies in its curriculum of Class XII to make studies more interesting. [H]

Daylight robbery at Mapusa: A daylight theft occurred in which property worth Rs.1.7 lakh including cash of Rs.92,000 was stolen. The theft occurred at 10.30 am at the main entrance of Mapusa Market wherein the cash was stolen from the drawer of the table belonging to a lottery seller Prakash Poulekar. The amount of Rs.92,000 was a collection of sale of Christmas donation coupons received from various lottery sellers. In another case, an unknown thief broke open the lock of a flat on the 4th floor of Alcon Apartment at Gaunsavaddo, Mapusa, belonging to one Kavita Gojan Madiwal, and stole a gold chain and silver pooja plates from the cupboard costing around Rs.15,000. Briton robbed of belongings at Candolim: A Briton was robbed of her belongings while she was on her way to a resort at Candolim on January 9 at about 11 pm. Two persons on a motorcycle allegedly robbed Ferguson of her belongings which she along with her husband and friends were returning to their resort after dinner. [H]

Grace marks in new sports policy: If chief minister Digambar Kamat is to be believed, then Goa’s potential of becoming a sports powerhouse in the near future looks a possibility. Kamat announced on January 12 that anew sports policy for the state would soon be put into force once it is approved by the cabinet. [TOI]

Lecture by Prof Kerkar: Institute Menezes Braganza in collaboration with Pratibha Friends Circle, Borim, will organise a lecture by Prof Rajendra Kerkar on “Folk Dances of Goa and Cultural Heritage of Goa” on January 17 at 5 pm at Raghvendraswami Sabha Mandap, Borim. [H]

Collegians take on cops: Around 300 angry students from GVM’s Govind Pai Raiturkar College, Farmagudi, held a morcha in front of the Ponda police station to protest the incident in which one of their peers – Paresh Bellur (18) - was seriously injured in an accident involving a private bus around 8.30 am on January 12 morning. The students gheraoed Ponda Police Inspector Manjunath Desai and grilled him about the safety of students and pedestrians in the town. [GT]

Chargesheet filed against Rohit: Calangute police filed a chargesheet in the children’s court on January 12 against Rohit Monserrate, son of education minister Atanasio Monserrate, in connection with the alleged rape of a minor German girl. [TOI]

Raia sarpanch voted out in no-trust motion: The Raia sarpanch Nazareth Gomes and deputy sarpanch Rumaldo Gonsalves were voted out of office by 6-5 votes in a no-trust motion moved against them on January 14. [GT]

Man convicted for rape of minor cousin: A 25-year-old youth from Baina, Vasco, was convicted on January 12, for sexually assaulting his minor cousin in November 2007. “The prosecution has proved beyond all reasonable doubt that it was the accused who raped the minor girl behind her hut,” President of Children’s Court Desmond D’Costa said in the order. Understanding the Science Behind Cashew Feni: The government of Goa under its industrial policy and biotechnology policy needs to encourage basic and applied research in the microbiology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and fermentation technology of feni production. Besides cashew feni the simple route to produce more valued cashew wine needs to be explored. GIP for feni needs to kick start the process of identification of other truly Goan products which could qualify for similar status. [Nandkumar Kamat, NT]

Siberian cranes fail to keep date with birdwatchers: Birdwatchers from Salcete are disappointed that migratory birds from Eastern Europe and the Himalayas have given them the slip this winter.
