Rains pound the state for second day
Pounded mercilessly for the second consecutive day yesterday, rain-related miseries have begun to seep in with the sate reporting water-logging at many low lying areas and gusty winds uprooting several trees, causing disruption in traffic. water logging was reported at various parts of Goa following inclement weather conditions. while the many parts of rural areas groped in the dark after frequent power failures, traffic at various places came to a standstill due to flooding and trees fallen across the roads. thanks to Goa state fire and emergency services for restoring normalcy. Anti-English lobby beats support drums for mother-tongue: stung by the congress legislature party's introspection over the medium of instruction issue, some members pf the devnagri Konkan lobby are seething in anger. most of their young stalwarts have parroted the usual rhetoric- that imparting primary education in ones mother tongue is the thumb rule of any education process. however, it appears that sheer helplessness over the CLP possibly taking forward a drastic review of the education policy, is what has made them fume with rage. CM launched drain work at Margao Gandhi Market: Chief Minister Digamber Kamat on Thursday launched work on the construction drain in Margao's Gandhi Market. Kamat broke the sacred coconut in the presence of ward councilor Rajendra Azgoankar, MMC Chairperson Babita Naik and others. [H]

Dy collector may be suspended: the state government is likely to take action against the deputy collector  allegedly involved in the sale of government land to a private party at Ashevm-Mandrem. revenue minister Jose Philip has taken the matter seriously and has warned that those involved in the irregularities in the sale of government land admeasuring 2.25 Lakh square meters at Mandrem will not be spared. When contacted, Jose Philip said, the government will look into matter and take stern action against those involved in the illegal sale of government land. [GT]

Census shows 3.8 p.c. rise in Govt servants: one among every thirty Goans is a government employee, says  the census of Goa government employees-2007. The state is ranked second only to the north eastern states in the country, which has the 1:16 ratio, for best employment figures. [H]
 
Domicile period should be raised: panel: the domicile requirement for availing the benefit under the Dayanand social security scheme might be changed by increasing the period of stay in the state from 15 years to 25 years from availing the benefit and ensure that only Goans get the benefit. This suggestion along with host of others, aimed at preventing misuse of the scheme by pensioners, migrants and those availing benefit from other schemes, were given by the members of the ad-hoc committee on health and social welfare at its second sitting on Friday. Women founded murdered at Arambol: A young woman was found murdered at Girkarwado beach at Arambol on Friday evening.  According to reports, locals had seen the women along with the women with two non-Goan youth at a restaurant in Arambol beach sometime at about 2 pm. At about 7pm, Fisherman noticed the two youth fleeing from the site and locals were startled to find the semi-nude women lying dead near a hut. Her throat was slit with an electricity wire. Pernem police rushed to the site and found the electricity wire and Condom near the body. The body has been sent for an autopsy at the Goa Medical College Hospitals, Bambolim and efforts an on to identify the deceased. PI Uttam Raut Dessai is investigating the case. [H]
 
Strong support for primary education in mother tongue: The leader of the opposition, Mr. Manohar Parrikar said that dissemination of primary education in mother tongue has been the stance adopted by the Bharatiya Janata party from the very beginning. " and the BJP stand by it not because of any other reason, but the scientific observation that mother tongue is best suited to educate a child during his formative years", he added. "the demand by few of the congress MLAs as regards providing grants to the primary educational institutions, could have been casual; however the issue is very serious and should not be passed off casually", Mr. Parrikar observed. Teachers on lecture-basis to earn more: The government has increased the remuneration of lecture- basis teachers teaching in secondary and higher secondary schools. From Rs 60 per lecture at higher secondary school level (class XI and XII), the teacher will now get Rs 150 per lecture/class. at the secondary school level (class V-X), the lecture-basis teacher will be paid Rs 40 per class. the duration of a class at higher secondary school level is 45 minutes while it is 35 minutes at school level. 5 inches rainfall in last 24 hours: The incessant rains continued for the second consecutive day on Friday, with the state experiencing 5 inches rainfall during this season has reached 43 inches. the state meteorological department has also warned fisherman from venturing into the deep sea as winds with velocity of 45 to 55 km/hr are blowing over the seas. Kamat hails rely budget: Chief Minister Digambar Kamat yesterday hailed the Union Railway Budget presented by the Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and said that it would be a "pro-people" budget. The railway budget, Kamat said does not impose burden by way of increase in freight charges or passenger charges, At the same time, she has, in keeping with our government's election promises, focused her attention on passenger amenities like security and safety of rail travel, making it an enjoyable experience, he said. Boom time for Gaunti vegetables!: What started with some degree of uncertainty, the scheme of Goa horticultural development corporation to market locally-grown vegetables and provide employment to those engaged in Agri-activities, has received a tremendous response. from just a handful of mobile hand-carts two years ago, their number has reached 116 most of which are dotting the national high way initially, just 2-3 tones of vegetables were being sold per day. now it has touched 45-50 tones, managing director of the corporation Orlando Rodriguez said. Bicholim primary students yet to get free raincoats: the distribution of raincoats to students of Std I and Std III of the government primary school in Bicholim taluka has been delayed and parents who were waiting for free raincoats, from the education department, for their wards had to purchases them from the open markets as the rains have not only hits the state but have already picked momentum. One gets Custody in mishaps case:  A person from Canacona has been sentenced to seven days judicial custody and a fine of Rs.5, 000 by Canacona JMFC, in a case involving an accident in November 2007. The conviction was pronounced on Friday in the JMFC court by judge Ram Prabhudessai. According to reports, Nagesh Lamani was riding an Activa Scooter, when he knocked down a Pulsar motorcycle at Nagarcem, causing injuries to Sunita Goankar.  [H]

GPYC squads in colleges to tackle ragging: Goa Pradesh Youth Congress, Committee (GPYCC) president Sankalp Amonkar yesterday stated that the Youth Congress is planning to start an anti-ragging squad in different colleges of Goa to curb this inhuman activity. He was speaking before the screening of the short film on ragging made by Janardhan Bhandari, District President of GPCC at Maquinez Palace Panjim. [GT]

Heavy rains to continue: As the rains continued to lash Goa for the third consecutive day, the state witnessed  several cases of water logging and tree falling. the met department has predicted that rains will continue with  such vigor for next couple of days an official from the department told herald that the monsoon had vigorous over entire Goa . Heavy rainfall was recorded in the most part of the state. [H]
 
Prog on 'amended regulation 17': The Goa chapter of the institute of company secretaries of India along with the Goa branch of the institute of charted accountants of India will be organizing a joint programmed on the amended regulation 17 on July 4 at the GCCI convention hall. the programmed will be addressed by the registrar of companies Goa CS Mr. Sanjay Kumar Gupta and will also include an interactive session. South SP seeks public helps to thwart attack:  Following reports of a terrorist threat to the State, South Goa SP Allen D'Sa went to Canacona on Friday to seek the help of citizens in coastal areas to assist police in thwarting a terrorist attack in the State. [H]

Director seeks Govt's intervention on Apna Ghar: Baffied by frequent escapes, the Directorate for Women and Child for the first time has sought government's intervention and presented its two inquiry reports over the circumstances at Apna Ghar. When GT contacted Director of DWC Sanjiv Gadkar informed, the inquiry reports were already submitted to the government on Tuesday, which A also included suggestions. [GT]

One arrested for cheating: A person from Poira-Bicholim was arrested in connection with the missing appropriation of Rs.81, 000 on Friday. It may be recalled that in a police complaint, the area manager of a company had started that one Kishore U Raut allegedly took signatures of bar owners with incentives form the company worth Rs. 81,000. Instead of giving the money to the bar owners, the accused kept the money for himself. A case under section 406 IPC has been registered. [H]

South Collector ignores farmers on rehabs issue: Agitating farmer from Rawanfond received a cold shoulder from the District Collector, south G P Naik when they called on him in the district collectorate here on Friday morning. The collector was not ready to listen to the grievances of the farmers and the delegation led by Aquem-Baixo sarpanch Agnelo Dias, Panch members and others. While the farmers tried to impress upon the collector to explain how the authorities have rehabilitated the displaced people form the Rawanfond junction in their fields. Naik insisted that there's no illegality in the decision, saying he has only implemented the policy decision of the cabinet. "We cannot do any things. The fields have already been acquired. The land now belongs to the government. This is a policy decision", he said. [H]

Two injured in accident: Two persons were seriously injured in a collision between a trailer and a truck at Loutolim main highway early yesterday morning. It was raining heavily at the time of the mishap. Drivers of both the vehicles were seriously injured and were admitted to nearby hospital. [GT]

Rains hit normal life in Borim, Shiroda: Normal life was disrupted here and areas of Shiroda due to the heavy downpour for the last two days. Vehicles owner were most affected as they faced a tough time manouevering through inundated roads. Farmers particulars in Shiroda areas, have taken break from their activity in the fields which are also flooded. In the evening, Shiroda sarpanch Bharti Shirodkar visited the flooded areas and promised to help. [GT]

Ishan to participate in international contest: Ishan Vidhyadar Sinai Kakodkar, a third standard student of Cambridge High School here, has been selected to participate at the international Mars spelling B competition, which will be held in Nepal in October. [GT]

Rally to create awareness on religious conversions: The Sanguem Hindu Jalad Kruti Dal will organise a rally to bring awareness on the alleged conversion activities by the  'Believers' group among the poor people in remote areas of the state, particularly in Sanguem Taluka. Varca- Telaulim Bridge cleared
HC rejects plea against land acquisition
Panjim:
The Bombay High Court at Panjim yesterday dismissed a petition praying for a stay to the government's decision to acquire land for the proposed Telaulim-Varca Bridge across Sal River. While rejecting the petition filed by George Fernandes, the High Court said that the government had not committed any irregularities in the land acquisition for the proposed bridge. It said that there was a demand from the villagers for a long time and that the bridge linking two villages was in public interest. [GT]

School Students escape unhurt in Sanguem mishap: School student from Sanguem had a lucky escape after the mini bus in which they were traveling collided against a coal-ladden truck near the entrance of Sanguem bus stand on Friday afternoon. The accident occurred when the mini bus (GA-01-W-4030), caring school students, was about to leave Sanguem bus stand when a truck carries coal from a local iron and steel manufacturing company collided against the bus. The traffic came to a standstill for nearly hour an hour. [H]

Kamat favors’ decentralization of power: Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said that his Government which is working for the welfare of common man has taken the administration to the doorsteps of the people by decentralizing powers. This mechanism of decentralization of power has helped to provide basic amenities and redress the problems of people particularly living in backward taluka like Canacona, he added.  [H]
