Mandovi bridge works are of highest quality & safety parameters: L&T

Panjim: Following a report on Herald “Major tragedy averted as Mandovi slab developed cracks” the contractors for the third Mandovi Bridge project, Larsen and Toubro (L&T) on Thursday said that the project works are of very high quality.“Project works are compliant with all requisite quality and safety parameters and substantial works are done off site in controlled factory based establishment at Dhargal,” the L&T has said.“Superstructure concrete segments are cast at pre-casting yard with fully mechanized concrete boom placer. Concrete cubes are sampled for each load of transit mixer and tested for cube strength. Minimum three cubes are cast and tested for each load of concrete and the concrete strength achieved is 40 percent more than design strength,” L&T said in a statement.
According to L&T, the concrete segment under reference was cast on July 8, 2016 and stacked at Dhargal precast yard. On March 1, 2017 at 5.00 am the segment was transported on multi axle trailer from Dhargal to the erection location. This was lifted and suspended from erection machine over high strength steel bars (PT bars) with concrete strength of M50 grade segment under discussion is 69.11Mpa, it says.The statement further explains, “On March 10, 2017 these erected segments were further aligned to true lines and levels using horizontal jacks. The horizontal force is applied to keep segments in position combined with vertical force for attaining super elevation in curves (at Pundalik Circle alignment is in curve). During jacking operations, segment was lifted upwards using overhead gantry crane which was resisted by horizontal locked PT bars thereby transferring additional 150% load resulting in distress and cracks in the segment”.
It added, “Immediately upon identification of above anomaly; segment was lowered and transported back to yard owing to safety of segment further suspended from erection machine. Alternative segment is identified and made ready from existing stock replacing damaged segment.”L&T has also said that the project safety is at par with international safety standards having OSHAS: 18001 certification.“Safety guidelines and procedures are integrated with IMS which is periodically reviewed and approved by UK based consultant and validated by Det Norske Veritas,” it says.
