Mapusa council chief steps down

Mapusa: Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Rohan Kavlekar has tendered his resignation from the post as a part of the mutual understanding between ruling councillors. A copy of the resignation letter was sent to the directorate of municipal administration (DMA) on Tuesday for acceptance, sources said.

As per the rules, Kavlekar has seven days’ time in case he would like to withdraw his resignation. Sources said the new chairperson will be in place before June 25, adding that two-time councillor and former deputy chairperson Ryan Braganza is very likely to take over the post.

Sources said that after the November 2015 elections to the civic body, then urban development minister and Mapusa MLA Francis D’Souza and then CM Laxmikant Parsekar had mutually divided the five-year term among the four senior-most councillors — Sandip Falari, Rohan Kavlekar, Ryan Braganza and Sudhir Kandolkar — to take turns in heading the council.

Four-time councillor and former chairperson, Falari, was elected unanimously as chairperson in November 2015. Kavlekar had taken in May 2017. [TOI]
