MMC chairperson makes surprise raids; strikes hard against illegal drainage

Margao: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Dr. Babita Prabhudessai today, accompanied by MMC officials, inspected the surroundings of the municipal buildings and gave standing orders to remove all illegalities and also to take penal action against the offenders.

“While everyone finds it so easy to blame the municipality why cannot people realise that they have a civic responsibility to not only maintain cleanliness without littering but to also not indulge in illegal activities,” she said.

She pointed out that the shanties behind Cine Lata have toilets and even rooms constructed over municipal drains. “So you can imagine what kind of muck goes in the drains and yet the people there expect the municipality to clean the drains,” she said.

Dr Babita disclosed that she appealed to the people living in the shanties to maintain cleanliness for their own safety to ensure that no disease breaks out in that area. “I also pointed out to them that they are not paying the municipality anything not even the garbage tax and appealed to them to co-operate,” she said.

However, she was aghast at the impunity with which restaurant and sweet mart owners release their waste water in the municipal drains and revealed that today they discovered that the sweet mart owner whose waste outlet was exposed yesterday had another one at the rear of his shop.

“I have instructed the technical staff to immediately seal off all these waste water outlets in the municipal drains and also asked them to instruct the violators to compulsorily go in for sewerage connection,” she said.
While lamenting that they got the Directorate of Municipal Administration’s order to appoint additional temporary staff to carry out pre -monsoon work only on June 5, she said, the letter was required as it involved payment to the labourers and further pointed out that the council cannot find labourers at the moment.
