Monsoon mars Ponda Taluka

Ponda: The stormy wind with heavy rains caused havoc across Ponda Taluka. Ponda Fire station gets around 30 calls between 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm today for immediate attention following damaged caused, mostly due to falling trees causing house collapse, tearing electric wires, blocking roads.

At Kaziwada Ponda Ward huge tree collapsed on house of a widow Murtaz Riyaz Chikodi when she, her daughter and a two and a half year old child was inside the house. All three luckily escaped and the minor suffered maximum injuries among all.

Councillor Seema Fernandis, former councilor Vincent Fernandis and Viraj Sapre helped the family members and called fire personnel to remove the fallen mango tree above the house. The child was admitted in Sub District Hospital and later discharged.

Ponda Fire station officer Sushil Morajkar said almost thirty calls received by fire station most were of tree collapsed on houses damaging goods and properties, followed by trees fallen on internal roads and highways and some parked vehicles were also trapped under trees reported at Shiroda, Borim, Dhavlim, Dharbandora, Farmagudi, Savoiverem, Khadpaband, Bethora,Mollem, Tisk Ponda, Shantinagar Ponda, Talavlim , Patantali Kavlem.

Viraj Sapre a Social worker reveals that fire personnel reported at the Kaziwada house almost after an hour since they were phoned as they were attending another call. Handful of fire personnel came to the spot. He called Deputy Collector and requested to send the team of Disaster Management and its labourers. It is learnt that short staff Fire station would take at least two to three days to clear the uprooted trees. [H]
