Numerical advantage in vain

Mapusa: 10-man Guardian Angel Sports Club fought gallantly to hold Vasco Sports Club to a goalless draw and split points in the Goa Professional League match played at Duler Stadium, on Thursday.

Vasco who had begun their GPL campaign with a win started the proceedings brightly but some alert defending by their opponents denied them in finding the all important winning goal.

It was Angel`s who had the first look at the goal when in the 18th minute Cliffon Dias cleverly flicked the ball off a throw-in from Rosario Mendes to Nicholas Rodriguez whose feeble header caused no problem keeper Sanju Thapa.

Vasco`s U-20 striker Aman Govekar would be reflecting as to how the ball did not find the nets after outsmarting the Angels defence with quick feet and then intelligently lobbed the ball over the onrushing keeper Ozen Silva only to find defender Joaquim Carvalho clear the ball on the goal line off a long floater by teammate Shubham Malwankar.

Vasco colts just like in the first half got the second half started promisingly but just ran out of ideas once inside the final third of their opponents and were once again unlucky in the 55th minute when Minesh Kunkolkar long ranger banged the crossbar.

Angels were dealt a major blow after an hour of play when they were reduced to ten men as referee Chandrashekar S. sent off defender James Fernandes following his second booking of the match for a dangerous tackle on Anil Gaonkar.

Vasco coach Micky Fernandes in search for the winner introduced striker Beneston Barretto for the hardworking and tireless U-20 striker Aman but failed in making any difference to the score board.

Vasco substitute Rugeved Yeole made a mess of a golden opportunity in the 76th minute when he failed in finding the nets off wonderful curling pass by Moises D`sa after Angel`s keeper Silva was out of position to the dismay of his teammates and the dugout. [H]
