Margao: Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai said with an aim to make Goa the second organic farming State in India after Sikkim, a global expression of interest (EoI) has been tendered to set up an organic farming centre of excellence in Goa.
He was addressing a daylong programme on organic farming in Ravindra Bhavan, organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Goa along with the Agriculture Technology Management Agency, South Goa recently.
He said that organic clusters schemes could be introduced in Fatorda if farmers are willing to opt for organic farming, with the government willing to bear the input cost and help in marketing the produce.
Canacona ZAO said that the programme is meant to spread awareness among the farmers and how to avail the schemes. Over 200 farmers, mostly women from various parts of South Goa attended.
“The programme is meant to encourage farmers to adopt organic farming,” he said.
Over the lack of demand for compost by Margao sewerage treatment plant and Saligao garbage plant, he said that if the department makes a proposal they can use it provided that it is tested for NPK.
The programme was a part of a larger awareness campaign by the departments. The officer informed that will organise several such training programmes across Goa. [H]
