Valpoi: Unhappy with the Valpoi Forest Department’s move to depute six forest guards in the village to check the movement of bisons following the death of a pillion rider in an accident, the villagers of Shel Dhada on Tuesday demanded that government permit them to kill bisons failing which they have threatened to launch a morcha on the department.
Shel Dhada and Guleli villagers claimed that these guards are mere standing by the road side like traffic police and just watching the locals entering and exiting the village. Their deputation will not help in stopping bison attacks on the villagers. The villagers demanded that the government relocate these animals elsewhere.
“Just one visit of the Forest Department officials and the minister to our village will not help in stopping bison attacks. We do not want assurances, we want solution, Pradeep Gaonkar, a villager demanded.
“I had a sugar cane plantation with production of 60 tonnes per year. Few years ago, I stopped growing sugar cane as these wild animals especially bisons destroyed the whole plantation. I had complained to the Valpoi Forest Department officials several times, but they failed to take any action, claimed Mahadev Bhingo Melekar, a villager.
“We knew that the Government will not be able to provide a solution to prevent the bison attacks on the villagers. So we demand that the Government give us permission to kill bisons, otherwise we will launch a morcha on Forest Department, warned Prakash Naik, former panch of Shel Dhada. [H]
