Mapusa: Rossman Cruz Sports Club registered a hard fought 2-1 win over Calangute Association Sports Club to lift the Vagator Soccer (UK Cup), organised by Vagator PYSC, at Ozran ground, on Sunday.
It was the Calangute side that send their supporters into raptures as Namresh Kundikar got hold of a floater from Vichal Vaigankar and scored with an intelligent lob over the advancing rival keeper Preston Rego to give his side the lead.
Rossman pressed hard for the equaliser and almost equalized in the 34th minute but a 25-yard strike from Beneston Barreto was pushed to safety by the Calangute keeper Selwyn D’Souza with a full stretched diving save.
In the very next minute, Beneston combined with Stephen Satarkar and on entering the penalty box slammed the ball into the goal.
On crossing over in the 48th minute, Rossman extended their lead with medio Remedious Vaz scoring from close quarters.
In the 65th minute, Rossman would have drawn the curtains down for Calangute Association but the keeper Selwyn came up with a brave save to thwart Jesley Moniz in a one-to-one situation.
Rossman Cruz returned home richer by taking the winners cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000 plus trophy, while Calangute Association had to be contented with runners-up cash prize of Rs. 70,000 plus trophy.
Vinod Palyekar, Minister for Fisheries & WRD was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Lavinio Rebello, GFA vice-president, Ramakant Shirodkar-Prop. Savitri Super Market & Wines and Savio Almeida,Sarpanch of VP Anjina Caisua and match officials. [H]
