Saligao locals corner VP over ‘illegal’ constructions

Saligao: Issues of illegal constructions and garbage rocked the Saligao gram sabha on Sunday. A large number of villagers were present and when the issue of alleged illegal constructions, that have come up in fields and on the hills, was raised, the sarpanch Lafira Gomes clarified that she had not issued any permission for construction of illegal houses and if the villagers wanted action then she was ready to send notices to the concerned parties.

Further the panchayat secretary claimed that the panchayat was not getting enough support from the residents who are into room renting business.

On garbage issue, the villagers pointed out that garbage was not being collected as expected and plastic waste and sewage were finding its way into nullahs. A resident sought answers as why the panchas were not doing enough on garbage problem in their respective wards.

Some villagers said that a lot of locals have given rooms on rent and, hence, there was more garbage being generated in the village, further suggesting that garbage should be collected thrice a week.

At this juncture, sarpanch Gomes said that under CSR one more garbage truck is expected for the panchayat and after the model conduct of conduct is lifted, the panchayat will undertake garbage collection on daily basis. The sarpanch requested the villagers not to dump garbage along the roadsides and if there was garbage lying anywhere then to inform the panchayat to do the needful.

The other issue that was raised at the gram sabha was regarding the foul odour emanating from the garbage plant. The villagers also raised the issue of illegal carts operating along the roadside and sought to know if the cart operators had NOCs and FDA license to operate.

The villagers also raised the issue of illegal scrapyards and highlighted the need for speedbreakers. They also raised queries over vehicles that are being parked at Saligao circle for sale.

On road widening issue, a resident sought to know as how many houses would be affected by the government’s proposal to widen the CHOGM road.

The panchayat secretary told the gram sabha that development proposals and budget could not be discussed due to code of conduct and the same would be raised in a special gram sabha after the election is over. [NT]
