Vasco: The 119th Shree Damodar Bhajani Saptah, begun on Thursday after the installation of the sacred shrifal (coconut) in the Damodar Sal at Vasco.
The Saptah is the biggest festivities that Vasco has been witnessing for the last over 100 years and the excitement has been only increasing every year.
The temple of Damodar is housed in the Sal (room) of the house of late Anant Joshi and is the same place where the first sacred Shrifal was installed 119 years ago. The festivity commenced after the Garane by the priests. The Bhajans will go on till today afternoon without a break, a tradition which had begun after the shrifal was installed.
The coconut used for the previous year will be taken in a procession around the city and then would be immersed in the sea at Khariwado as a part of Saptah celebration conclusion.
The immersion happens with a procession of dancers, bhajan and kirtankaars and the ritual is known as ‘Gopal-Kala’.
Some families also sprinkle water while standing on top of the terraces or balconies and drench the dancing Gopal Kala.
The town this time has elaborate security and traffic arrangements. The Swatantrapath is loaded with the Saptah stalls the second and the most exciting part of the Saptah in Vasco. The ban on plastic has been effective but not fully as several vendors are using paper and jute bags but some still continue to use plastic for food and other items.
There will be a rush for all seven days this Saptah as it will be strictly for seven days this year. [H]
