Sardesai exhorts Goans to unite for agriculture

Margao: Agriculture minister Vijai Sardesai on Tuesday callel upon the people in general and farmers in particular to come together and help the government script a new success story for agriculture in the state. “Goans now need to unite for the common cause of agriculture so as to take the state forward.

In order for tourism to flourish, agriculture should be provided a boost, so that the llocal farm produce is patronised by the tourists visiting the state. That’s the new story,” Sardesai said while speaking at a programme held at Davorlim-Dicarpale panchayat to educate the farmers of the various schemes of the agriculture department.

“We will support the farmers and give a fllip to agriculture. We are ready to compromise on anything,including politics to create a new Goa.” Navelim legislator Luizinho Faleiro was also present.

Upon Faleiro’s request, Sardesai agreed to take up a plot in Davorlim on a pilot basis for promoting community farming, which he said will be totally funded by the government. Stating that providing safe food for people was among the priorities of the government, the agriculture urged the farmers to adopt old organic methods of farming.

He also assured to provide marketing support to the farmers, including setting up a market to sell their produce.Sardesai also advised farmers to grow crops that give better yields.Speaking on the occasion, Faleiro,urged the government to extend support to the farmers. [TOI]
