Ponda: Congress workers from Shiroda have opposed fielding imported candidates for the upcoming by-election to Shiroda constituency.
The Congress workers were addressing a party Melava at Shiroda on Sunday. Responding to the concerns of the workers, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar said that the party would not force any candidate within and outside the party on constituency, but the party workers and the block committee would have the responsibility to short list candidates with the capacity to win the election.
Addressing the melava, Chodankar said, “It is a good sign that BJP supporters too are interested in joining the Congress. This shows that BJP has lost ground among people. It has long queues of candidates wanting to contest Shiroda by-polls.”
He said that the party would launch a door-to-door Jansampark Yatra shortly. “The yatra will expose the lies of BJP by holding discussions with public,” he said.
Chodankar informed that during the door-to-door visit, the party would find out the most preferred candidates and only then the GPCC would declare the candidate for Shiroda constituency.
The by-election to Shiroda constituency necessitated after former Congress MLA Subash Shirodkar resigned and joined the BJP last October.
Former chief minister Digambar Kamat said that Shiroda voters have got an opportunity to teach a lesson to the betrayal by Shirodkar.
Ponda MLA Ravi Naik said in order to avoid defection, party workers should take a joint oath before the temple deities. [H]
