Shiroda has many aspirants for Cong ticket

Ponda: The exit of former MLA Subhash Shirodkar has now opened the doors for several aspirants to contest the Shiroda by-election on a Congress ticket.

The list of aspirants now includes Sunil Sawkar, a former sarpanch of Borim and sitting panch, Hemanth Samanth, Manurai Naik, whose wife is Borim Sarpanch, independent candidates Diya Shetkar and Nilesh Gaonkar, who had contested the 2017 Assembly election.

Nilesh and Diya were recently with Congress workers to protest at Borim Circle against Shirodkar’s entry into BJP.

Abhay Prabhu, who had contested election on MGP ticket from Shiroda in last Assembly election, also considers himself as probable candidate for Congress ticket, while Jaydeep Shirodkar, an Independent ZP member and son of former MGP MLA Jaykrishna Shirodkar has expressed his willingness to contest the Shiroda by-poll on the Congress ticket.

Recently, Congress Goa Desk in charge Chellakumar and GPCC president Girish Chodankar met him and Jaydeep appeared confident of winning the seat for Congress if given the ticket.

It may be recalled that GPCC president Girish Chodankar had already declared that the candidate for Shiroda by-poll would be decided by local Congress party workers at a joint meeting to be held at the South Goa level soon.

There is enthusiasm not only among Congressmen but also among the party supporters following party president personally meeting workers in Shiroda. Due to this many Congress supporters feel that they should be given ticket to contest the Shiroda by-election.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders are making hard efforts to win the by-election.

Vinay Tendulkar on Sunday met BJP party workers to garner support for newly inducted Subash Shirodkar. Tendulkar, Shirodkar and local Shiroda block president Suraj Naik visited the houses of local BJP workers.

Tendulkar appealed BJP workers to shun past differences and support Shirodkar in the by-election.

It is learnt that some BJP workers in Shiroda have decided to wait for their leader Mahadev Naik, who is likely to arrive in state on November 4 from the US, to take a final call on whether to support to Shirodkar or not. [H]
