Margao: Following complaints of traffic chaos at the Margao-Colva circle following installation of traffic signals, minister for town and country planning Vijai Sardesai, inspected the site on Thursday along with senior officials of the traffic police and the public works department (PWD). works department (PWD).
The south Goa traffic police have suggested that several structural changes be made to the island to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Sardesai told reporters after the inspection that the traffic signal system has been tweaked to enable manual intervention to change the signals as and when needed by policemen, who will be stationed at the traffic island. The timing of the signals has also been reduced, considering the congestion witnessed at the traffic island, he said.Officials of the PWD have also been directed to consider reducing the radius of the traffic circle so as to facilitate quicker movement of traffic.
Construction of a slip road at the junction from the Margao end, leading to Ravindra Bhavan, as has been done for the other three roads at the traffic island, is also under the department’s consideration, sources said.
The public works authorities have also been asked to consider the suggestion of the traffic police that the inner road from the old tinto joining the Colva road, be made functional. Delineators and signboards will also be put in place near the traffic island at the earliest.
As snarls were witnessed at the junction just the day after the signals were made functional earlier this month, locals have been demanding that the authorities take immediate steps to remedy the situation.
DySP (traffic) Prabodh Shirwaikar, later told reporters that once the necessary structural changes were made to the island, traffic flow would be smooth. [TOI]
