Panjim: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) teachers on Thursday staged a dharna outside Goa Legislative Assembly Complex demanding a hike in salaries, regularisation and renewal of their contracts.
However, the dharna was called off after the teachers received an assurance from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) that their letter of joining will be distributed on Friday (July 13).
The teachers claim that that their salaries had been lowered to Rs 7,000 and that the contract due for renewal in June has not been renewed.
“The Central government till the last year would give us Rs 16,000 salary which is now cut and brought down to Rs 7,000 which is not acceptable to us. We had also met the Education Department after which a proposal was made to the State government if they could pay the balance amount but till now nothing has been done and the files are just moving,” SSA teacher Gangaram Lambor said.
He added, “We do not have job security, as now the central government has cut our salaries and in the future they might close down this program. We had also submitted a memorandum demanding that all SSA teachers be absorbed by the State but here too nothing was done.”Some teachers said it has been months that they have been fighting. [H]
