ARBORETUM

Arboretum by definition is a place for the scientific study and public display of various species of trees and shrubs.

There is a particular philosophy behind the layout of this Arboretum. It is a well known fact that apart from water and air, plants are the main source of human life directly and indirectly i.e. through animals which in turn are dependent on plants.

Therefore, in this Arboretum "MAN" is taken as the center and his needs are defined and are classified in three primary categories. Physiological, aesthetic (sensory satisfaction) and spiritual needs. Different needs in each primary levels are described, plants satisfying these needs are identified and planted in well demarcated sections. Primary levels and their further subdivisions are as under:

Category I - Physiological (Basic Needs) Plants
Food for growth and energy Rice, Wheat, Nachani, Maize, etc.
Vitamins and Minerals Vegetable - Leafy
Vegetable - Fruity
Fruits
Medicines for protection Medicinal plants
Category II - Aesthetic (Supplementary Needs)
(Sensory Satisfaction)
Man has got five sensory organs (PANCHADNANEDRIYA)
Tongue - Taste Spices
Nose - Smell Aromatic plants
Eye - Colour Decorative and coloured plants and flowers
Ear - Sound Plants from which musical instruments are made
Skin - Feel Clothing
Category III - Spiritual
(Complimentary Needs)
Our great thinkers of the past had recognised the necessity of planting trees for maintaining the ecological balance. It was difficult to convince this scientifically to illiterate masses. They, therefore, introduced a system of worshipping trees by identifying them as God/Godddesses in whom they had great faith and devotion. Different sections exhibit this.
