CASHEW PRODUCTS
Cashew is
one of the important cash crops of Goa. Currently about 10,000 tons of
cashew are produced. Due to good market and consistent efforts by the
Government of Goa people are turning to plantation of cashew trees.
Cashew nut is a unique nut where the nut is outsite the fruit.
Kernel of cashew is tasty as well as nutritious.
A visit to "ARYA CASHEW PRODUCT PVT. LTD.", cashew processing
factory, located in KERI village in Ponda Taluka will be very
interesting.

PROCESS
|
Steam
Roasting Steam is passed for about 20 minutes through a
drum filled with cashews. The roasted cashew are then allowed to
cool for about 24 hours. |

Shelling Hand operated cutters are used to cut
the outer hard shell. In this operation half of the shell
separates leaving the kernel in the other half. The kernel is then
removed manually by a small tool. |
Roasting After shelling, the kernel is kept in a
BORMA for uniform heating where they become crisp |

Peeling Between
the outer hard shell and the kernel there is a soft shell. This
shell is removed manually by a small tool.

Grading In the
above process, some kernel are broken in half and/or pieces.
Grading is based on size, colour, whole or pieces of nut.

Packing Graded
nuts are packed either in polythene bags for local market or in
tins for exporting to other states and foreign
countries. |

| All the
processes described above, are manually done by female workers
which constitute 95% of the total work
force. |
CASHEW
APPLE
Cashew apple is a juicy It is very
colourful. It's juice is extracted by pressing the apples. The juice is
then fermented and distilled to produce Goa's famous
FENI.
Visitors
can purchase cashews of their choice at competitive rates at the
factory.
