Truck veers off road at Poinguinim; 4 shops damaged

Canacona: A multi-axle truck carrying 25 tonnes of construction steel veered off the road after its steering system allegedly got blocked damaging four shops in Poinguinim. The incident occurred at about 1 am on Saturday night.

This is the second accident to happen within a week involving a multi-axle truck, after a similar truck loaded with industrial goods fell on its side at Gimnem in Poinguinim last week blocking the NH66 for over 5 hours.

“The driver of the ill-fated truck who escaped with minor bruises is from Telangana and cannot understand Hindi nor English and it is difficult to communicate with him; but the way he is trying to explain it looks like the steering system got locked when he crossed over a hump in the Poinguinim bazaar,” a police officer investigating the accident told Herald.

The owners of the damaged shops depend on these shops for their living and have told the authorities in no uncertain terms that the truck can be removed only after they are fully compensated.

As the machinery to remove the truck did not arrive till Sunday evening, the truck occupying half of the narrow road created a bottle neck as police failed to control the traffic along the narrow road.

“We are lucky that the accident happened during the night otherwise surely there would have been human casualties. A few years back in a similar accident a truck had rammed into a roadside shop at the same place instantly killing the shop owner,” ex-deputy Sarpanch Satish Paiginkar said.

“The locals here are also demanding a crane or a similar heavy vehicle to retrieve such huge vehicles whenever they meet with accidents,” another local activist Diogo Da Silva said. [H]
