Ponda: Unable to negotiate an ascending 90 degree turn near Venkteshlila Hotel, a huge container truck fell on the railing of the newly inaugurated flyover at Ponda.
Luckily, the truck did not fall off the flyover on service road below; had it so happen, it would have resulted in loss of life.
The truck and the railings were severely damaged in the accident, but the truck driver escaped with minor injuries.
Herald had forewarned of such accidents in a report titled as “A -90 degree turn is a harbinger of death”, published on its February 12, 2019 edition.
Locals Surel Tilve and Dinesh Naik accused the government of having wasted crores of rupees on the four-lane widening from the existing two-lane but failed to clear the several dangerous sharp turns along Dhavlim-Farmagudi bypass.
Earlier, at the same spot many trucks and tankers have gone off the road. Locals recalled an incident involving a tanker carrying aviation fuel losing control on the sharp turn and almost getting gutted while other trucks were badly damaged.
Surel said nowhere such sharp turns of 90-degree exists on steep slope. Locals blamed PWD Minister Sudin Dhavlikar and engineers for inaugurating the road despite its dangerous condition. Locals demanded to straighten it as this road with ninety degree turn is causing accidents. [H]
