Usgao villagers march to sub-station; complain of frequent power failures

Ponda: A large number of Usgao villagers led by Usgao Yuva Morcha, an NGO, marched to the Curti power sub-station and complained to the executive engineer that they have been facing frequent power failures, on Wednesday.

The villagers questioned the engineer why the power problem is not addressed despite them filing many complaints. The discussion with the engineer lasted for two hours.

Morcha President Chandrakanth Naik told Executive Engineer Sunil Wadkar that the arrogant behaviour of linesmen pains them most – leaving aside the frequent power failures. Therefore, the villagers asked Wadkar to strictly instruct the lower rung staff to behave properly with the consumers.

On the main issue, Chandrakant told the engineer that since past many months frequent power failures have been causing them great hardship; the frequent power failures not only rob the citizens of their sleep and peace of mind, but also damage perishable goods stored in refrigerators.

Assuring to look into all the problems, Engineer Wadkar pointed out that Usgao is a vast area and that even low intensity wind leads to falling of trees on power lines resulting in power failures.

However, local Laxmikant Naik refused to accept the theory of tree fall. “Even when there is no cyclonic wind, we are facing power failures for long hours during the day and at night,” Laxmikant countered. He demanded that if needed, the department should install new power lines, transformers, and also employ more linesmen and staff.

The villagers suggested that the Department conduct maintenance work, trimming of tree branches, cutting of dangerous trees leaning on lines.

“However, the department failed to conduct such maintenance for the past two years. Besides, the number of houses at Usgao has increased, which require additional transformers. Thus proper steps are required to provide uninterrupted power supply,” said a villager.

The citizens also brought to notice of the engineer that some LED streetlights installed in village has been done so as per the wishes of local panchas; some panchas even managed to focus street LED lights towards their houses.

The locals also complained that the phone calls of citizens are not attended to by office staff at Usgao electricity office; besides, the mobile van is also not in operation since past one month.

Meanwhile, the Junior Engineer Rajesh Naik who is looking after Usgao area said that he needs more staff to attend to the grievances of locals and frequent power failures. Further there is need for separate staff for maintenance of high tension lines and low tension lines. [H]
