Vasco locals complain of rampant encroachments at vegetable market

Vasco: Despite of several anti-encroachment drives undertaken by the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) at Vasco vegetable market, situation there has gone from bad to worse, as vendors keep encroaching on the internal market road, making it difficult for the citizens to move freely.According to locals, they face immense hardships whenever they go there for purchasing vegetables, as the road is occupied by vendors by keeping their goods, leaving the stalls vacant. “I feel that all this is happening because the municipal staff is busy with the election work. The vendors have taken undue advantage of the absence of municipal staff inspecting the market,” complaints Pramod Amonkar, a Vasco resident.
Similar concerns were raised even by others. “When MMC was keeping a watchful eye on such encroachments using CCTV cameras, the situation was fine. However, after these CCTV cameras became defunct, hardly any municipal staff is visiting the market, which the vendors have taken advantage of,” said another local, calling upon MMC remove the encroachments. When contacted, MMC Chief officer Deepali Naik claimed that, “Presently 90 percent of the staff have been taken on election duty, as such the present staff cannot concentrate on such encroachments. However, I will again send my team to the market to direct the vendors to vacate the roads. If the vendors don’t listen, then, we will start taking action against the encroachers.” [H]
