Mapusa: Vasco Sports Club and Velsao Sports & Cultural Club played out a goalless draw in the Goa Professional League match organised by the Goa Football Association and played at Duler Stadium, here on Tuesday.
Vasco have five points while Velsao opened their account with one point.
Velsao SCC coach Eban Mesquita started with two strikers upfront –Joseph Pereira and U 20 Dylan Rodrigues, while at the other end Vasco coach Micky Fernandes shouldered the responsibility on his lone U-20 striker Aman Govekar.
Velsao colts were determined as they had just one agenda before the start of the match and that was return home with their first win. And they did shine brightly by having two close attempts at the Port Towners goal early in the match. In the 15th minute a 25-yard free-kick by Bersal Viegas hit the crossbar. Minutes later, Velsao’s Remedios Vaz sent a curling cross from the right flank to well positioned Joseph Pereira inside the penalty box but the latter’s header went just past the side post.
Vasco outfit did not have much in the first session except in the added time where a stinging free-kick by Moises D’Sa was not cleanly collected by Velsao keeper Preston Rego, but Aman could do very little in scoring off the rebound.
On crossing ends, the spectators present were entertained to some fast pace of football where both the teams time and again attacked but failed to find the back of the net.
In the 58th minute, Veegan Ferrao drilled a hot-blooded shot which was blocked on the goal-line by Vasco defender Myron Pereira.
Another chance went abegging for Velsao as substitute Manjunath Rathod drilled a right footer from top of the penalty box which was saved by Vasco keeper Sanju Thapa.
At the other end, the Port Towners came with two close attempts at the rival goal. A 30-yard blistering free-kick by Rugved Yeole was superbly pushed for a corner with a full stretched save by keeper Preston.
And then in the 84th minute, a goal bound efforts by Anil Gaonkar rebounded of the post where Jaison Vales strike off the rebound was blocked by Velsao defender.
While Port Towners failed to convert in the 90th minute Velsao almost scored the winning goal but Manjunath Rathod strike banged the horizontal bar. [H]
