Victorino floors Panjim Footballers

Mapusa: Victorino Fernandes’ hat-trick enabled Sporting Clube De Goa to score a comfortable 4-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the ninth round match of the Goa Professional League organised by Goa Football Association at Duler Stadium, here, on Thursday.

With today’s win Sporting Clube move to second position with 19 points from nine matches while Panjim Footballers are in 10th position with four points and staring at relegation from seven matches.

The Hero-of-the-Match was Victorino Fernandes, who got his hat-trick with Cajetan Fernandes getting the fourth goal for Flaming Oranje.

Panjim Footballers started brightly and had the first chance in the 13th minute when Daryl Costa disposed defender Suresh Thappa but could not sort out his feet to have a shot at the goal and the ball was cleared for a corner by Clemente Joseph.

Victorino put Sporting Clube ahead in the 19th minute with a stiff grounder after capitalising on goalkeeping error by Sherwin Da Cunha, who made a mess of a high ball clearance from Panjim Footballers defender, 1-0.

Cajetan then made it 2-0 for the Flaming Oranje in the 28th minute with a controlled finish from a long throwing taken by Clive Miranda.

Panjim Footballers’ any hopes of getting back into the back were up in smoke when Victorino scored his second goal in the added time for Sporting Clube with a cool finish after being fed by Egyptian Fady Riad inside the danger box.

Down by three goals and a comeback distinctly impossible, Panjim Footballers did not lay back and took the field for the second half with more vigour and in the 53rd minute Daryl controlling a long ball from Valmiky Miranda busted into the danger box and sent a dangerous looking cross at the goal which was well collected by keeper Melroy.

Melroy was once again in the action 10 minutes later this time denying Cyril Dias from a dangerous looking cross by Alston Camotio down the left flank.

Victorino got his hat-trick with a clinical finish from a pass by Cajetan to round

the score sheet to 4-0 and complete a satisfying day for Sporting Clube as this win enabled them to leapfrog Dempo Sport Club from the second spot.

Sporting Clube still had time for the fifth goal but Marcus who had a quite outing today failed in directing the ball goal wards after Victorino’s shot in the 80th minute hit the woodwork and rebounded into play. [H]
