MOIRA CHURCH

Moira church

It was founded in 1636 by the Franciscan fathers, the expenses being paid for by the village ganvkars. The structure underwent major changes in its different sections, over four different occasions. The frontal-façade of the church was rebuilt in 1800, the Capela-Mor in 1814, the main body of the church in 1832 and the last being in 1838, when the new belfry was constructed in order to accommodate the newly acquired bell.

Principal titular: Nossa Senhora da Immaculada Conceicao. (Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.)

The Annual Village Feast is celebrated on 8th December, preceded by Novenas and Salves. There is, of course the usual fair with all the accompanying "khajenkars".

The Church has 5 Altars:

  1. Main Altar - Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.
  2. Saint Sebastian
  3. Bom Jesus
  4. Sacred Heart of Jesus &Mary
  5. Our Lady of the Rosary

The Monument of Christ the King with a Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes with the altar is in the Church compound.

There are four Chapels in the village:

  1. Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus - Sataporio
  2. St. Sebastian - Povoacao
  3. Our Lady Of Lourdes - Atafodem-Kallizor
  4. Holy Cross - Pirazona

Moira Church bell

One of two big bells of the Convent of 'Madre de Deus' from Old Goa was acquired by the Moira Church in 1838.


Lourdes Chapel

Church of Our Lady of Lourdes situated at Alto-Calizor in close proximity to the faithful of Atonfondem, Calizor and Raint.


Pirazona

The Pirazona Chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross, situated in the heart of the Vaddo.
