The Moira School…

St. Xavier's High School

St. Xavier's High School (Primary Section)St. Xavier's High School (Primary Section), Moira situated at the confluence of Raint, Pirazona and Novo Portugal.

St. Xavier’s High School or Moira School as it is popularly known was started by four daring young men, Agostinho Dias Soares, Manuel Francisco da Cruz, Joseph D’souza and Jaganath Ghad in 1935. It was another two years before recognition was obtained from the University of Bombay. In 1939 thanks to the vigorous efforts of Mr. D’Cruz affection, the students of the school were able to appear for the Matriculate Examination for the first time.

In the early years, it was only Mr. D’Cruz’s sheer love for the spread of education, that drove him to triumph over the many financial and other problems that plagued the Institution in its nascent stages. By his side was Mrs. D’Cruz as an able guide, friend and the Schools Headmistress, always, ready with encouragement and help.

In 1953, Mr. Calangutkar acquired the School from Mr. D’cruz, only to transfer it to the Moira Fabrica in March 1963. It is now run as an English medium school and is registered and managed by the Diocesan Society of Instruction, Patriach’s Palace, Panjim.

The School is a co-ed school consisting of a Primary Section (Std. KG - IV) and Secondary Section (Std. V – X) aided by the Government. Each Section is housed in two separate buildings. The new building of the School which houses the Secondary section was built by contributions from the villagers of Moira and the tireless efforts of Fr. Nuno da Cruz, the then existing Vicar and Principal of Moira School.

A hallmark of the School is its well equipped laboratory, and the recently added Basketball court. The Annual day of the School is celebrated in the traditional goan style with theatrical and cultural exhibitions by the students and the distribution of awards for academic excellence. The academic progress of the School can be gauged by the almost 100% results attained by the students at the SSC examinations.

In the years to come, students of St. Xavier’s High School, Moira will fan out to other parts of India and even to other parts of the global village. They will hold positions of responsibility and honour, but the first words of instruction and discipline which emerged from this fountainhead of their early education will always be remembered by them. The process has already begun!!!
