Westerly winds to turn nights warmer, days cooler: IMD

Panaji: After experiencing colder nights for the last couple of days, a change in wind pattern to westerly is expected to make the nights warmer and days slightly cooler for the next three days.

While the night temperature is expected to rise by at least two degrees, the day temperature is expected to stay in the normal range over the next three days, officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.

The state had experienced coldest night on Saturday with lowest minimum recorded in ten years due to heavy snowfall in Jammu
and Kashmir and hailstorm in Delhi which brought cold northerly winds to the state. However, the wind patterns as well as cold condition of Northern states have changed.

The maximum temperature in the capital city on Monday was above normal at 32.8 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature was 19.5 degrees Celsius which is one notch below normal.

“Last weekend when parts of the state experienced chilly nights and chilly wind blew during daytime, the wind direction was northerly and due to western disturbance minimum temperature had fallen across the northern parts of the country. Now westerly winds are blowing from the sea which is warmer and humid,” the IMD official said.

On Saturday, people woke up to a chilly morning as minimum temperature dipped to 15.9 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees below normal, the second lowest minimum in the last two months. The day temperature was also
recorded at 29-30 degrees Celsius, which was at least three degrees below normal.

According to IMD officials, on January 2, 2019, the weather department recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 17.4 degree Celsius in Panaji and 10 degrees Celsius in Valpoi.

The minimum temperature on Sunday in Mormugao had dropped below average temperature by 4.5 degrees Celsius and was recorded at 17 degrees Celsius while in Panaji, the temperature fell by 2.5 degrees Celsius while Valpoi recorded 13 degrees Celsius temperature. [NT]
