Young Goan’s bid to summit Mount Everest aborted

Margao: Young mountaineer Rahul Prabhudesai’s bid to become the first Goan to summit the Mount Everest was aborted at 7800 metres on May 18 as he contracted stomach ache and diarrhoea due to dehydration.

However, Goans back home have showered praises on Rahul for having attempted to summit the world’s highest mountain.Rahul’s mother and MMC chairperson Babita Prabhudesai expressed happiness as well as some grief regarding her son being unable to summit the Everest and complete his life expedition.

She said Rahul was brought down to Kathmandu as he developed a stomach ache and diarrhoea due to dehydration and added that he is fine and will return to Goa in a day or two. Babita said, “Feel sorry for the people, who have been let down due to the drastic stop to my son’s Mission Everest”.

Rahul began his journey on March 21, and was in the last leg. “He was one of their best bets,” she said adding that one of the sherpas had claimed about Rahul’s fitness and readiness.

“I feel that one should not give up and if you have decided for such a big target, you should try even if it seems impossible,” said Babita. When asked as to whether Rahul will reattempt to summit the Everest, Babita said it is up to him to decide.

Babita said, “The Telangana Government has sponsored a huge team of mountaineers from their state attempting to climb Mount Everest. The Goa Government should also attempt something similar as it will give a boost to those willing to do so”. [H]
